The Privilege of Being a Writer by Imran Akram

Being able to write is a privilege. Those of us who grow up in Britain often take this honour for granted. Those who write for a living or aspire to do so can sometimes find themselves complaining about the agony of forming perfect sentences on a page. But we should never forget how lucky we are to be able to write those 26 letters of the English alphabet and turn them into words and sentences.

Over the last few days the media has been full of reports of the shooting of Malala Yusufzai, the 14-year-old student from Swat in Pakistan, who was shot because she wanted to go to school. She wanted to learn to read and to write. And she used her skills to tell the world her story.

Writing is all about telling stories. It’s about passing on the things we’ve learnt on our life’s journey.  You are the only one who can tell your story. That’s why Brit Writers works hard to help you tell it to the best of your abilities and bring it to the world.

So, carry on sculpting your masterpiece. Every piece that is written is important and of value. It is only by continuing to write that you will perfect your craft. Remember that writing is an honour, and that you are one of the chosen few who do what you were born to do.

  1. Hi Imran!

I just loved your article and its debut is perfect for me. I was just struggling with the perfect words and also is my writing worthy of a place on a mantle. My gift of writing is just that a gift. No training nor special school so there is always that question hanging over my head.
Reading your article gave me an epiphany. Don't stress over it, just have fun telling our story!!!

    Regards my friend, Laura LaVeglia

  3. A relief this morning to hear that Malala has chances of a full recovery. She has shown outstanding courage in her fight for the right to education for all women.

  6. Great piece Imran
So sad that the reason behind her shooting was the desire to learn and for others to have the opportunity to do so too.
Stories are interwoven in every part of our lives and all cultures developed due to the stories/myths/legends that were passed down generation after generation.
