How to Combat Writer's Block by Laura Caulton

Ever found yourself half way through your latest piece of writing and not being able to finish because you cannot think of anything else relating to the topic?
Writers experience this from time to time throughout their writing career and many struggle to get over it and continue to write. I have found my own way of overcoming writer's block and this I wish to share with you.
I have found that a tidy work space is essential because when you are working on a cluttered table or desk, there are too many items around you that catch your attention and draw you away from what you are originally doing, also refreshments and nibble's just to the side of you can stop you from wondering into the kitchen to get something, random excuses for things can easily be avoided by organization.

Sometimes a brisk stroll around your local area can 'dust away the cobwebs', in other words can make you forget any troubles or worries and stress and open up your mind to enable the writer within to make an appearance, also having a stroll around can give you inspiration for stories, articles and any type of writing ideas.
Always carry a pen and small note pad with you, inspiration can be found anywhere and it's really frustrating when you have an idea but have forgot it by the time you get around to doing your writing.

Try to read as many books as possible, from these you can pick up on the way other authors/writer's describe things and get their point across enabling you to learn new tips and better yourself at your work.

These are the main rules I guide myself by when working on a new piece of writing and so far I have found they are quite effective, I have only ever had writer's block once but I had two days away from writing to refresh my mind which helped a lot. If you have to meet deadlines and cannot take time away to refresh your mind, you could try some gentle music in the background but make sure you are able to work in a place where other people entering the room cannot distract you.

Hope this helps all of you who are currently dealing with writers block.
Thank you for reading.

  1. Laura,
Lego works for me. I built a whole city once and soon got back on the keyboard.

    1. Hello Wendy, I've never even thought of lego before! I'm too much of a big kid, if I picked up lego my writing would get neglected but so would everything else.

I'm excited to try lego next time :)
